How Insomnia Can Lead To Memory Loss

how-insomnia-can-lead-to-memory-loss

It doesn’t matter how old you are; insomnia is the most typical sleep disturbance. However, nearly half of senior adults have difficulties falling asleep and staying asleep.

Although a lack of sleep may seem like a minor issue that can be fixed with a nap or over-the-counter sleep medicine, chronic insomnia has substantial consequences for the physical and mental health of the elderly if left untreated.

As an organization specializing in home health care in Maryland, we hope to raise awareness of the connection between adequate sleep and improved mental health in later life.

If left untreated, sleeplessness has been linked to adverse effects on seniors’ brain performance and overall health. One of the most critical factors in establishing long-term memories is getting enough uninterrupted sleep.

Minor symptoms, such as weariness and mood swings, may increase and eventually lead to memory problems if an older adult is not getting enough sleep.

Insomnia is not a natural part of becoming older; therapies are available to help people get the rest they need. Seniors are at increased risk for significant health problems if they do not get enough sleep.
